The District Department of Transportation will temporarily close the southbound lane of First Place NE to vehicle traffic between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, beginning June 3, 2019 through October 31, 2019, weather permitting, as part of The Metropolitan Branch Trail project.
The temporary closures are required to construct a temporary bypass while the new trail is being constructed. On or about June 3, 2019, DDOT will start Phase B construction of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) between Gallatin Street and 1st Place NE. The existing trail from Gallatin Street to 1st Place NE will be reconstructed during this phase to connect the new trail and the existing sidewalks along the 1st Place, NE. DDOT will also replace sidewalks and ramps at the intersection of 1st Place NE with the entrance to the WMATA parking facility, replace catch basin covers at Gallatin Street, install pedestrian lighting, pavement markings, trail signage and MPD security cameras.
Signage, traffic drums and protective barriers will be used to guide pedestrians and motorists through the work zone area safely. Drivers are advised to stay alert while traveling to this location and to be observant of road work crews.
The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) project is the next major milestone toward completion of the planned 8-mile trail between Union Station in the District and Silver Spring, Maryland. This section of MBT, will facilitate local access and connectivity between the Fort Totten Metro Station, Catholic University of America and the surrounding communities.
